The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the ability to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
